Description

Suzhou is a thousand-year-old city. It was built in 514 BC. Wu Wanghelu, the father of Wuwang Fucha, ordered the rebel general of the Chu State Wu Zixu to build Helu city. It has a history of more than 2500 years. During the Spring and Autumn Period, this was the capital of Wu State, and many historical sites related to Xi Shi, Wu Zixu and others still remain. It was called Suzhou in the 9th year of Emperor Kaihuang in Sui Dynasty (589), and its name is still in use today.

The city is still located on the original site of the Spring and Autumn Period, and basically maintains the double-checkerboard pattern of “parallel water and land, rivers and streets adjacent” and the quaint style of “small bridges, flowing water, and people”. Suzhou was also the capital of many regimes, including the Yue Kingdom of the Warring States Period, Wu, the grandson of the Three Kingdoms, and Zhang Wu at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. Suzhou is the city with the most world cultural heritage in China, and nine gardens have been listed as world cultural heritage.
